Approximately ninety percent of non-bulk cargo across the globe is transported by container ships. Grain and coal fall into the bulk cargo category. They are often moved in their raw form, package-free in large volumes in the hull of the ship. Prior to containerization being invented in the 1950s, break-bulk materials were loaded, secured, unlashed and unloaded one piece at a time from the ship. When the cargo was grouped into containers, there were approximately 1000-3000 cubic feet of cargo that can be simultaneously moved after each unit has been standardized and secured. Break-bulk cargo shipping has greatly increased overall efficiency. It is estimated that shipping time has been reduced by eighty-four percent and costs have been reduced by approximately thirty-five percent. Approximately 90% of non-bulk items were shipped in containers in 2001. The first cargo ships were born in the 1940s as redesigns from World War II tankers. Cargo ships do not use individual dividers, holds or hatches that are a part of traditional container ships. The hull of the container ship is similar to a sizeable warehouse that uses vertical guide rails to divide the area into cells. These cells have been designed to transport the cargo in containers. Most cargo ships are designed from steel but additional materials such as plywood, fiberglass and wood are used. Many containers are categorized by their size and function since they are designed to be transferred to and from trucks, trains, coastal carriers, semi-trailers and more. The entire shipping industry has been revolutionized by containerization, although, it did not start out in the easiest manner. Railway companies, ports and shippers were initially concerned about the extensive costs associated with building the railway infrastructure and ports required to accommodate container ships, along with moving the containers via road and rail. There was skepticism regarding potential dock and port worker job loss when containerization was announced for fear that numerous manual jobs would disappear. Approximately ten years of legal battles occurred prior to container ships began international service. A container liner service from the Dutch city of Rotterdam to the USA first started in 1966, soon to change world trade and shipping across the globe. Initially, it took days to unload and load traditional cargo vessels. Container ships have transformed timelines by only requiring a few hours for loading and unloading. Cutting labor finances and shortened shipping times between ports has been hugely successful. It only takes a few weeks to deliver items from India to Europe and vice versa, whereas it used to take months previously. Generally, there is less damage to materials thanks to less frequent handling. Securing loads properly also helps with less cargo shifting during transport. Before shipping, containers are closed and only opened after they arrive at their new location to prevent theft and damage. Container ships have reduced shipping time and lessened shipping expenses, resulting in enhanced international trade growth. Cargo that was previously shipped in bags, bales, cartons, barrels or crates now arrives in sealed containers from the factory. Scanning machines work with computers to trace the product code on the contents. Technological advancements have enabled this accurate tracking system to be precise within fifteen minutes on arrival of a two-week voyage. This has helped with guaranteed delivery and manufacturing times. Raw materials show up in sealed containers from factories in under an hour prior to being used in the manufacturing industry; resulting in fewer inventory expenses and greater accuracy. The shipping companies supply the exporters with boxes for loading products. Materials are delivered by rail or docks or a combination of both and then loaded into container handlers. Before containerization, it would take large groups of men and many hours fitting cargo items into different holds. The shipping industry today relies on cranes either installed on the ship or on the pier to situate containers on board. After the hull has been fully loaded, additional containers can be attached to the deck. Efficiency has been one of the main design elements for cargo ships. Break-bulk ships may carry containers. However, cargo holds that have been dedicated to container ships have been carefully built to speed up the loading and unloading process and designed to keep containers secure while traveling the ocean. The specialized hatch design allows openings from the main deck to access the cargo holds. These openings flow along the whole cargo hold area and are surrounded by the hatch coaming which is a raised steel structure. The hatch coamings have hatch covers located on them. Wooden boards and tarps initially covered the hatches and held the battens secure until the 50s. These days, hatch covers often consist of solid metal plates that are lifted on and off the ship with cranes. Some hatch models utilize articulated mechanisms and hydraulic rams to facilitate opening and closing. Another important cargo ship design feature is cell guides. Attached to the cargo hold in the ship, cell guides are vertical pieces of metal that help organize the cargo. These guide containers into specific rows during the loading process and offer support during sea travel. The container ship design relies on cell guides so much that organizations as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development use them to differentiate between regular break-bulk cargo ships and container ships. There is a system used in cargo plans consisting of three dimensions to outline a container’s position aboard the ship. The initial coordinate starts at the beginning of the ship and increases aft. The tier forms the second coordinate. It starts in the bottom area of the cargo holds and the second tier is located on top of the first one and continues to grow. Next, the third row forms the third coordinate. Rows found on the port side of the ship exhibit even numbers and those located on the starboard side are given odd numbers. Rows that are located along the ships’ center are designated lower numbers and they increase for locations found further from the center. Container handlers carry 20, 40 and 45 foot containers. The big containers will only travel and fit above deck. The forty-foot sized containers makes up ninety-percent of the shipping containers. Approximately 90% of the freight moves across the globe with container shipping. It is estimated that 80% of global freight travels with 40-foot containers. Container Handler PDF
