History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started in 1919. The company was originally established by an engineer Anton Raky. Raky was a pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology. The original company name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
The cornerstone for SMAG was laid in 1937, when the Salzgitter Group purchased a manufacturing facility for its constructing drilling machinery. In the year 1986, the company bought the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into an international brand in the following years. Currently, SMAG is the market leader in the globe, using grabs for waste disposal, worldwide cargo handling applications and agriculture.
