Lift Truck Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries utilized to power electric lift trucks must be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety procedures must be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is vital to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is essential for employees working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be situated close to the charging place. The route to the station should not be obstructed and an injured employee should be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed near a battery and charging area. Never allow objects such as lighters or matches to be used when somebody is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be correctly ventilated. The recharging method could release gas. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
